Powerball & Mega Millions Jackpots Slashed Due To Coronavirus

The US Powerball and US Mega Millions are famous the world over for their huge jackpots - the US Powerball made international headlines in October 2016 with their record-breaking $1.6 Billion (that’s with a ‘B’) jackpot.
Both the US Powerball and US Mega Millions have also been growing in popularity across the UK with companies such as Lottoland, LottoGo and Unibet offering bets on the US draws - you’re not actually buying a ticket on the official draw, however, the mechanics are the same - choose 5 numbers from 1–69 and a ‘PowerBall’ from 1-26 with a chance to win the huge jackpot.

Lottery jackpots rollover each week until there is a winner, then they ‘reset’ back to a minimum jackpot amount. Both the US Powerball and the US Mega Millions had a minimum jackpot amount of $40 Million, until last week when they announced this was being halved to $20 Million. The companies operating the lotteries cited coronavirus as the cause - players that would usually buy their tickets in a shop are unable to leave their houses and economic uncertainty making people less likely to spend money. As the minimum jackpot is based on ticket sales this meant the minimum jackpot had to be reduced.
What Does This Mean For UK Customers?
The good news is that lotto betting companies in the UK (Lottoland, LottoGo, etc) have the option to set their own jackpots and minimum jackpots - they’re not obliged to follow the US operators. At the time of writing the UK lotto betting companies had the following jackpots:
|Official US Powerball Draw (US Players only)||$20,000,000|
|Lottoland (UK)||£286,000,000 - Lottoland have rolled the jackpot over despite the official jackpot being reset back to $20,000,000. Plus, currently they’re listing the minimum jackpot on their website as $40,000,000|
Whether Lottoland keep on offering an enhanced US Powerball jackpot or not, we’re not certain. However, you should keep in mind that it pays to compare - always check the operator for the latest jackpots before betting.
What About The UK Lotto & Euromillions?
Currently in the UK you can purchase lottery tickets in supermarkets and petrol stations that are still open. However, there have been certain shops that have taken the decision to stop selling scratchcards as they view these items as ‘non-essential’.
The UK National Lottery has a strong following of customers online and through their app, however, they may be seeing an overall decrease in ticket sales due to the lockdown. Here at CompareTheLotto.com we wouldn’t be surprised if the UK were to follow the US by reducing the minimum jackpot amount.
