A little over a year ago the lottery industry in South Africa benefited from the launch of the UK's Betfred brand in the country. Was the hype at the time justified? If you haven’t checked it out, should you?

We summarise some of the important facts to showcase Betfred’s value and show you how they’ve been getting on in South Africa.

The Basics

Of course, it’s all about the Lucky Numbers, but you may not realise the extent to which design affects how much you enjoy online betting. Navigation and design elements determine whether you have an overall good user experience while placing your bets.

Luckily, Betfred’s online platform is user-friendly. This proves the value of having a site backed by experienced, industry leaders that have had years of experience to help understand their customer base. For example, having quick access to ‘How to Videos’, straight from the main menu, helps newbies get comfortable using the platform within a few minutes.

Lucky Numbers Worth a Mention

When news surfaced of them gaining access to the African market, a much-anticipated feature of Betfred was bringing Lucky Numbers/Lotto products that aren’t available at other bookmakers:

Nifty Fifty

The Nifty Fifty game was thought up by Fred Done who owns Betfred. It’s exclusive to Betfred, which means this was the only bookmaker that could bring it to South African bettors.

A year later, it’s still only available through Betfred and its popularity is cemented.

Various features make this game so sought-after:

  • Draw Frequency: Every day of the week, there are five draws (12:30, 15:30, 18:30, 19:30 & 20:30 SAST).
  • Bet options: There are multiple ways of betting on Nifty Fifty, such as Classic, Bonus or First Bonus.
  • Numbers: In the Classic game, you can bet on six numbers, while most popular lotteries (e.g. UK 49’s) only offer five numbers. More numbers means bigger returns - however, more number also means much harder to win.
  • Big Returns: With Nifty Fifty you can get returns as big as R5,000,000/1 if you bet on 6 balls.
  • Nifty Fifty Consolation: An added feature is that you can still win something, even if you didn’t get all six numbers correct. Betfred offers R10,000 as a consolation prize if you play the maximum stake on six numbers, but only get five correct.

Fred’s Hourly Powerball

Fred’s Hourly Powerball is yet another game you only find on Betfred and you can look for it on the Lucky Numbers page.

While exclusivity is attractive, what makes it interesting is that the game has a draw every hour.

Some key facts:

  • There is the ‘Classic’ draw where 5 balls are drawn from 1-50
  • You can bet on 1, 2 or 3 balls from the Classic draw
  • Then, an additional 2 balls are drawn from 1-12 (The Powerballs)
  • You can bet on 1 or 2 Powerballs
  • You can choose to bet ‘Classic’, ‘Powerballs’ or ‘Classic + Powerballs’

At the time of writing the odds/pay-outs available are below - if you’re betting on 3 balls + 2 Powerballs, you can get up to R84,000/1

Bet Odds
1 Ball + Power 50.00
1 Ball + 2 Power 520.00
2 Balls + Power 580.00
2 Balls + 2 Power 5800.00
3 Balls + Power 8500.00
3 Balls + 2 Power 84000.0

All results for Fred's Hourly Powerball are available here, as an easy reference tool for players to stay up to date with their latest results.

Betfred Boosted Odds

Betfred always aim to be best odds or equal best odds on lottery bets within the UK and it certainly looks like they’re trying to achieve the same in South Africa. At the time of writing Betfred is best odds for the following:

  • UK 49’s: 52/1 on 2 balls, 470/1 on 3 balls and 46/1 for the Bonus Ball.
  • SA Lotto: 58/1 odds on 2 balls, 525/1 on 3 balls and 49/1 f or the Bonus Ball.

Note that for all the above, the odds are for betting with the bonus ball.

Conclusion

So, a year down the line—what have we learnt?

It was a definite win for South African bettors when Betfred entered the local Lucky Numbers market. Great sign up offer, regular promotions for existing players and unique tailor-made Lucky Number products. Give Betfred a try this year and let us know in the comments what you think.
