There is a new sheriff in Lotto town... A new lottery draw feature is headed for the United States, offering even more chances to win life-changing money.
Double Play for Powerball will be available in select states and offers players a second chance to match their Powerball numbers. There will be a second drawing where a top cash prize of $10 million is up for grabs.
The press release from the Powerball Product Group explained how it would increase the number of drawings that take place in a week from two times to six to keep up with growing player demand.
Powerball Product Group Chair and Missouri Lottery Executive Director May Scheve Reardon explained: "America's jackpot game is picking up the pace to keep up with player demand — going from two drawings a week to six if you include Double Play. Players have let us know they want to play for bigger jackpots and cash prizes, and we want Powerball to deliver on their expectations."
When will Double Play be available?
The first draw happened on the 23rd August, 2021.
Which states will it be available in?
Players in the following 13 jurisdictions will be able to get involved; Colorado, Florida, Indiana, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, and Washington.
How will Double Play work?
The player can opt to select Double Play before buying their Powerball tickets. Once you choose your numbers between 1 and 69, plus two Powerballs, they will be re-entered into a second drawing for a shot at a top prize of $10million.
How much will Double Play cost?
Players in selected regions will be able to add this exciting feature to their Powerball ticket for an additional $1 per play.
Why are Powerball launching Double Play?
The press release went on to suggest the new lotto will allow for more jackpots for a greater number of players: "The Powerball Product Group anticipates adding the Monday Powerball drawing will result in larger, faster-growing jackpots. The group also expects to see an increase in the number of cash prizes and jackpots awarded on an annual basis."
What are the odds of winning Double Play?
The mechanics are the same as Powerball - Choose 5 numbers from 1–69 and a 'PowerBall' from 1-26. This means the odds are the same, however, the stake and jackpot are smaller. The odds and prizes are as follows:
Match | Prize | Odds |

5 Balls | $500,000 | 1 in 11,688,053.52 |
4 Balls + Powerball | $50,000 | 1 in 913,129.18 |
