It is a hugely popular past time in the UK with more and more people enjoying a fixed odds lotto bet. However there are some rumours circulating that the UK government may be about to stop the fun. UK betting companies have already been stopped from taking bets on the National Lottery and EuroMillions draws. The generally understood reason for this ban was to stop the massive surge of customers starting to bet on the lottery rather than buy a ticket. The lottery operator argued that this could see funds directed away from good causes (and obviously eat into their profits!).
Well as the bookmakers aren't required to give to good causes, they can offer incredible pay outs. For example with Betfred, you can win £700 from a winning bet on 3 numbers on the Irish Lotto! There is now some evidence that the UK government might try and stop customers from betting on these international lotteries. This could include the hugely popular Irish Lotto and the Spanish whopper, El Gordo. The UK Daily Mirror Online reported that Sports minister Tracey Crouch will consider bringing in new laws to stop them should this market grow. She said:
" This is a potential growth market for gambling operators. There is a danger good cause returns could decrease. "These bets are contrary to the spirit and intention of the prohibition in the Gambling Act."
