A 56-year-old grandad from Hyde, Paul Walker, has won £150,000 from a £1 stake when betting on the Irish Lotto at Betfred - in the very same week he found out he was being made redundant.
But it wasn’t instant joy for Paul when the draw was made – as he forgot he had made the bet and didn’t discover it until four days later.
Paul was placing a football accumulator in his local Betfred shop on Saturday when he threw a spare pound on an Irish Lotto bet. His football bet failed, and he went about his business as normal for a more days – watching films at home on Saturday evening as the draw was made, before sorting some household chores on Sunday and returning to work on the Monday.
The news of a mystery unclaimed winner in his Betfred store emerged on Tuesday, as staff from the store tried to discover who the lucky lotto winner was – remembering that the man who placed the bet had dark hair and wore glasses.
It was not until a few days later after a phone call from a friend who told him to check his numbers that Paul found the betting slip in his shirt pocket and discovered that he was indeed the lucky Irish Lotto mystery man!
After learning of his impending redundancy, 56-year-old Paul was worried about having to retrain for a new job. He is now currently planning on how to use his winnings.
The Manchester United fan and his wife have already booked a luxury holiday in Mexico, while they also have their hopes set on a Mediterranean cruise and a new car – as well as giving their family a Christmas to remember. He’s also promised his friend Steve and 12 other lads from work a pub crawl to celebrate.
Speaking about putting his Irish Lotto bet on, Paul said, "I’m being made redundant next year, so this brilliant win has come at just the right time. I can’t believe it. I had sorted my football acca and just thought I would have a go trying to get five numbers on the Irish Lotto."
"I had some change and through to myself that I’d had some bad luck recently and could do with a miracle, so went for a lucky dip so the numbers are picked at random... then I forgot all about it!"
Wife Susan admitted she has always given him stick for going into Betfred with him retorting that he will prove her wrong one day – which has certainly proved to be the case. She said Paul had no colour in his face when he arrived home on Thursday, with Susan believing it was because of toothache he had been suffering from. Instead, shell-shocked Paul told her of the £150,000 win and couldn't stop hugging her.
