After working in the gambling industry for over a decade, Oliver spotted an opportunity to setup a resource for lottery bettors. CompareTheLotto.com was founded in 2014, with Bet49s.com and Bet49s.co.za following shortly after. The aim is to find the best odds, offers and information for lottery bettors.

Betfred has added a new option to its lotto betting called Bonus Ball Boost. It lets you add a Bonus Ball to your bet on the Irish Lotto, the 49’s or the Nifty 50, at no extra cost. If your Bonus Ball is drawn along with your main numbers, your winnings are boosted.
Below we explain how it works, what it pays, and the things to be aware of before you use it.
A Bonus Ball Boost bet works like a normal lotto bet with one extra step:
When the draw takes place, there are three possible outcomes:
In short, the Bonus Ball is an extra chance at a bigger payout. It doesn’t cost anything and it doesn’t take anything away from a normal win.
Here are the Irish Lotto odds published by Betfred at the time of writing, with and without the boost:
| Numbers matched | Standard odds | With Bonus Ball boost |
|---|---|---|
| 3 | 625/1 | 1,500/1 |
| 4 | 7,500/1 | 50,000/1 |
| 5 | 125,000/1 | 1,000,000/1 |
Odds correct at time of publishing. For the latest odds visit the operator’s pages.
So a £1 bet on three numbers would return £626 if your three numbers came up, or £1,501 if your Bonus Ball came up as well. The boost gets bigger the more numbers you pick – on five numbers the potential payout is eight times higher.
Maximum winnings are capped at £5,000,000 on the Irish Lotto and 49’s, and £10,000,000 on the Nifty 50. Odds can change, so always check the prices on your bet slip before placing a bet.
Betfred has been a top-rated bookmaker on CompareTheLotto.com for a long time. It’s currently ranked #1 on our site with a 5/5 rating – you can read why in our full Betfred review.
A big part of that is price. Betfred often has the best odds for these lottos, so Bonus Ball Boost is an extra on top of prices that are already competitive. You can check how Betfred compares with other bookmakers on our Irish Lotto odds, 49’s odds and Nifty 50 odds pages.
A boosted payout can make a bet look more tempting, but it doesn’t change your chances of winning the bet itself. If you choose to use Bonus Ball Boost, a few practical steps help:
