Various news outlets are reporting the UK government will be raising the minimum age requirement for individuals to buy lottery tickets.

These reports come hot on the heels of Camelot - the company that operates the National Lottery - also intimating that the legal age will soon be changed.

Earlier in the year, the House Of Lords also voiced their support of raising the minimum age to 18.

It is expected that changes to the law will occur in 2023 - however, some companies are already taking action to ban 16 and 17 year-olds from buying lottery tickets.

What does this mean for the lottery industry?

The immediate reaction from senior figures in the lottery world was overwhelmingly supportive, with luminaries such as Camelot CEO Nigel Railton and the European Lotto Betting Association voicing their backing for the move.

Many of the companies we propose here at Compare The Lotto already require participants to be over the age of 18. It is important to note any company offering lotto betting must ensure all customers are over 18.

We are pleased to see that the lotto industry continues to align itself with regulatory authorities and takes its commitment to responsible gaming seriously.

The Health Lottery - Minimum Age Raised

The charity-based Health Lottery has already gotten ahead of the curve and raised its minimum age requirement to 18.

Renowned for its socially responsible outlook, The Health Lottery donates over 25% of every ticket bought to charitable foundations. Indeed, such is their commitment to good causes that they have financially supported over 3,000 local community projects.

Therefore, it was unsurprising to see The Health Lottery throw their weight behind industry-wide legislation that is being put in place to help protect minors from the prospect of developing any issues with gambling problems in the future.

National Lottery and Postcode Lottery - next in line?

At the time of writing, both the National Lottery and Postcode Lottery still allow 16-year-olds and 17 year-olds to buy tickets. They are both expected to enact and embrace the new age restrictions over the coming months.
